How to Make Fried Coconut Shrimp
If you’re wondering how to make fried coconut shrimp, it is not as difficult as you may think. Our recipe keeps the coconut crisp and the shrimp juicy without the take-out favorite’s unfavorable greasy texture. There is a quick three-step process to follow while trying our best fried coconut shrimp recipes.
An overview of the three-step process is that you will first dip your shrimp into flour. Then you are going to have an egg mixture and dip the shrimp into the egg mixture. Finally, take that same shrimp and heavily dunk it into a mixture of coconut and panko flakes. The result: delicious, golden coconut shrimp.
The egg sticks to the flour coat, and the coconut panko mixture adheres to the egg. We recommend using more coconut to panko for a sweeter and more tropical result.
Why is Panko Better than Traditional Breadcrumbs?
We recommend panko over traditional breadcrumbs because panko stays crispy longer than traditional breadcrumbs. It does not absorb as much grease or liquid during the frying process. Panko is a crustless bread crushed into flakey bits. It stays crispy longer because of its airy texture.

If you are curious, you should be able to find a sweet Thai chili sauce in the international section of your grocery store. For a sweeter route with controlled spiciness, you can opt for some peach preserves, lime juice and add red pepper flakes at your preference.
Coconut shrimp can be a much-easier-to-master-than-it-looks dinner option or an impressive finger food to entertain guests. The dish can be served with or atop a salad, veggies, rice, or whatever suits your tastebuds.
How to Make Fried Coconut Shrimp
Easy, fast, and delicious.
- ⅓ cup of all-purpose flour or whole wheat flour
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground pepper
- ½ teaspoon of sea salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup of coconut flakes
- ¾ cup of panko breadcrumbs
- Coconut oil
- 1 pound of shrimp with tails, peeled and deveined
- Gather 3 medium-sized bowls. In the first bowl, you will want to mix the flour, pepper, and salt. In the second bowl, crack the eggs and whisk them together until beaten.
If you do not have a whisk on hand, a fork will do. In your third bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs and shredded coconut flakes.
- Rinse the shrimp in cool water and pat dry with paper towels. First, you will dip each shrimp into the flour bowl, then the egg, and finish the dipping process by dunking the shrimp into the coconut mixture bowl. You will want to make sure the shrimp is fully coated with the coconut and panko mixture for the most flakey results.
You may have to pat the coconut mixture gently into the shrimp to make sure it fully adheres. Place the coated shrimp onto a separate plate while you dip the remaining shrimp into the three mixtures.
- Heat a large skillet on the stovetop to medium heat. Cover the bottom of the pan with coconut oil. You will want to fry the shrimp in small batches and avoid overcrowding your pan.
Place the shrimp about one apart from each other. Cook each side for about 2-3 minutes. Once the shrimp is done cooking, place them onto a platter lined with a paper towel to absorb excess grease.
- Serve with one of the dipping sauce recipes of your choice below, sprinkle the shrimp with cilantro, and enjoy! You can save your leftovers in the fridge for up to three days.
